At Counselling & Co., we are deeply committed to supporting the next generation of therapists as they grow into skilled, compassionate practitioners. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of mentoring many practicum students and intern therapists and we have continually refined our program, drawing on feedback from past students and key stakeholders, to create a learning environment that is both supportive and enriching.

Our internship program is designed to help you strengthen and expand your therapeutic skills within a supportive, structured, and purpose-driven setting. We ask our practicum students to bring dedication, curiosity, and a genuine openness to learning. In return, we provide a rich, hands-on experience that includes personalized guidance, opportunities for shadowing, and supervision rooted in reflection and growth. You’ll be part of a collaborative team culture that values integrity, authentic connection, and continual professional development.

As part of the practicum experience, interns contribute meaningfully to our Affordable Therapy Program, which offers counselling at reduced rates to make therapy more accessible within our community. This program allows you to support individuals and families who might otherwise face barriers to care, while gaining valuable experience providing therapy in a way that truly makes a difference. It’s a reflection of our shared commitment to compassion, inclusivity, and community connection.

Below, you’ll find details about our intern counselling program, including our structure, supervision approach, and application process. We invite you to explore whether Counselling & Co. is the right place for the next step in your learning journey, with the hope that our practicum students can see themselves growing with us and potentially joining our team long-term.

Before You Apply

To ensure our intern program is a strong fit for both your learning goals and our clinical approach, please review the following requirements before submitting your application.

At Counselling & Co., we believe it’s essential for therapists to have a clear map in the therapy room-a guiding framework that supports both the therapist and the client in navigating complex emotional terrain. Training in a therapeutic model provides that foundation, helping you stay grounded and intentional in your work. It also helps you speak a similar language to your teammates in clinical supervision.

Our practice integrates both bottom-up and experiential approaches, with a strong emphasis on nervous system awareness and relational safety. We draw from these perspectives to help clients move toward deeper regulation, connection, and healing.

1. Training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

At Counselling & Co., Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is at the heart of our work. This evidence-based approach provides a powerful foundation for working with individuals, couples, and families. We require all interns to have completed-or be willing to complete-EFT training prior to beginning their practicum. The specific training pathway will be discussed with you, based on the client populations you’ll be supporting.

2. Population-Specific Training

In addition to foundational EFT training, we may ask that interns pursue supplementary learning relevant to the client populations they intend to work with-such as trauma, addiction, reproductive mental health, child/teen therapy, neuro-affirming practice, etc. These additional trainings deepen clinical understanding and ensure your practicum experience aligns with both your professional interests and the needs of our clients.

3. In-Person Engagement and Team Participation

At Counselling & Co., we believe that meaningful learning and professional growth happen not only in supervision but also through active engagement with our team and clients. As a practicum student, it is expected that you will participate in a variety of on-site, community, and virtual engagements, including in-person client sessions at our Oakville location: The Therapeutic Collective Oakville, team meetings, supervision groups, and community events. These experiences allow you to develop stronger clinical skills, build meaningful professional relationships, network, and fully integrate into the collaborative culture of our team. Availability and willingness to engage in these in-person opportunities is a key component of a successful practicum with us. This hybrid model allows for deeper learning, stronger team connections, and valuable hands-on clinical experience.

If this approach to learning and supervision resonates with you, we’d love to hear from you.
