Kindness costs nothing, but can be the most valuable thing you give to someone.
Hello and welcome! I’m Karrie, an intern psychotherapist at Counselling and Co., and I focus on working with children, families, and individuals navigating challenges such as ADHD, addiction, emotional dysregulation, and family conflict. I come to this work not only with over 17 years of experience in children and adult mental health, but also with the lived experience, growing up around family dysfunction and addiction. My personal and professional background deeply inform the way I show up for my clients: with compassion, openness, and respect for each person’s unique story.
My passion for helping others began at a young age. Growing up in a family affected by dysfunction and addiction gave me a deep, personal understanding of how pain can impact relationships, emotions, and self-worth. I learned that healing begins with feeling truly seen and supported. That experience became the foundation for my journey into helping others.
As a Child and Youth Worker and mom to three boys in my 40’s, I have learned to approach life with patience, empathy, and a deep appreciation for the everyday challenges families face. Postpartum and parenting has taught me as much about connection, regulation, and resilience as any formal training and it continually shapes the way I show up, both as a therapist and a human being.
Why Work With Me
My approach to therapy is grounded in connection. I believe that healing begins in spaces where people feel genuinely seen, heard, and safe. I offer a non-judgmental, warm, and collaborative environment, where you can bring your whole self without fear of shame or rejection. I’m told that I am pretty funny and have a good sense of humour, so be prepared for that to emerge during our work together! I bring not only clinical knowledge but also a genuine, human-centred approach to every session. I believe therapy should be a space where you can show up exactly as you are. My style is authentic and genuine, and I honour the courage it takes to reach out for support and strive to create a safe space where you feel empowered to explore, heal, and grow.
Working from an emotionally focused therapeutic approach, I work with individuals and families across the lifespan, where each session is tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you’re a youth struggling with school and peers, a parent seeking support for your child, struggling with personal challenges, or navigating the impact of addiction in your life, I’ll walk alongside you as we explore what healing and growth can look like—for you.
Professional Background
I have been working in the field for over 17 years, in a variety of settings, including mental health and autism services, live-in and day treatment programs, and schools working with children, teens and families.
I am a registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I am currently completing a Master of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Waterloo, along with a diploma in Child and Youth Work from Mohawk College.
Things I Bet You Didn't Know About Me
Self-care for me includes: talking with friends daily, reading a good book, hiking or paddle-boarding (or just being out in nature), and escape rooms (because the stress and pressure of needing to solve challenges in a specified time is somehow relaxing!).
I hope to incorporate play therapy into my practice one day.
I met my husband when I was just 10 years old, and we’ve been together for over 30 years. We’re raising three amazing boys.
