Trauma Counselling
Therapeutic Support Throughout Your Reproductive Journey
Trauma doesn't always look like what people expect.
Sometimes it's a single overwhelming event. Sometimes it's something that happened repeatedly, quietly shaping how you move through the world.
Trauma counselling at Counselling & Co. helps you understand not only what happened, but how it continues to show up in your emotions, your body, and your relationships. Together, we make sense of the responses that once helped protect you, so the past has less power over how you experience the present.
Trauma Can Show Up in Different Ways
You might be experiencing:
Getting caught in the same patterns, reactions, or relationships, even when you want things to be different
Feeling angry, irritated, uptight, on edge
Difficulty trusting, letting people in, or feeling safe and settled in relationships
Feeling numb, disconnected, spaced out, alone, or like you're just going through the motions
Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or reminders that are hard to shake
Avoiding people, places, conversations, or situations connected to what happened
Shame, guilt, or blaming yourself for what happened
Emotional or physical reactions that feel bigger, faster, or harder to control than you expect
Turning to substances, gambling, food, or other behaviours to numb, escape, cope, or find relief
Engaging in self-harm, thinking about suicide, or feeling like you don't want to be here
How We Work Through It Together
Knowing the trauma is in the past doesn't always mean it feels that way. You may know you're out of harm's way and still find yourself reacting, shutting down, pulling away, or preparing for something to go wrong.
Our therapists are grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), helping you slow things down and understand how trauma continues to show up in your emotions, reactions, and relationships. Together, we make sense of what you learned to do to protect yourself and how those responses may still be shaping how you see yourself, respond to others, and experience closeness and connection.
Some of our therapists also integrate Brainspotting and EMDR into trauma work. When these approaches are used, preparation and pacing matter. We work collaboratively so that processing happens when you feel ready, rather than rushing toward the most difficult parts of your experience.
Trauma Counselling for What You've Experienced
Trauma can come from something that happened once or experiences that built up over time. You don't need a diagnosis or even a clear way of describing what happened to begin therapy.
-
An accident, assault, frightening medical experience, sudden loss, or another event that overwhelmed your ability to cope at the time.
-
Experiences that happened repeatedly or over a longer period, including abuse, neglect, instability, or relationships where you felt unsafe, controlled, or harmed.
-
Early experiences that continue to shape how you see yourself, respond emotionally, or experience relationships as an adult.
-
A pregnancy, birth, or postpartum experience that felt frightening, overwhelming, out of control, or very different from what you expected.
Trauma Counselling in Oakville and Across Ontario
Trauma counselling is available in person at our village hub, Therapeutic Collective Oakville, and virtually across Ontario. A hybrid approach is also available, allowing you to move between in-person and virtual sessions depending on what works best for you.
We know that feeling comfortable with your therapist and having agency in the process matters. If there are things that would help you feel more at ease, whether that means knowing what to expect before a session, having more say over pacing, or telling us what you need as we go, we welcome that conversation.
When You Are Ready, We Are Here
If something from your past is still shaping your present, or you're looking for a place to understand what you're experiencing, we're here.
Our complimentary 15-minute Meet & Greet gives you a chance to connect with one of our therapists, ask questions, and see whether they feel like the right fit for you. We'd be honoured to be part of your village.
Questions About Trauma Counselling
-
Trauma counselling is a broader term for therapy focused on the impact of trauma. EMDR and Brainspotting are specific approaches some of our therapists may integrate into trauma therapy depending on your needs and the work you're doing together.
-
No. You don't need a PTSD diagnosis to come to therapy. If something you've experienced is still affecting you, we can start there.
-
Trauma therapy doesn't mean you have to immediately tell your therapist everything that happened or go into the most difficult parts of your experience. You have agency over the pace of your therapy, and your therapist will work with you to prepare before processing traumatic experiences more directly.
