Individual Counselling
Make Sense of the Emotions, Experiences, Relationships, and Patterns That Have Shaped You
Sometimes you know exactly what is bringing you to therapy.
Other times, it is harder to name. Something just feels off. You might feel anxious or overwhelmed, angry more often than you want to be, disconnected from the people around you, or stuck in a pattern you cannot seem to change. Maybe work is taking everything out of you. Your relationships feel harder. You have less patience at home. Or life looks perfectly fine from the outside, but it does not feel that way on the inside.
At Counselling & Co., individual therapy is a place to slow things down and get curious about what is happening underneath. Together, we can make sense of the emotions, experiences, relationships, and patterns that have shaped you, while also paying attention to what you need in your life right now. You do not have to arrive with the right words, a diagnosis, or even a clear idea of what you want to change. We can start with what you know and figure out the rest together.
What You May Be Experiencing
There are a lot of reasons people find their way to individual therapy. You might recognize:
Feeling anxious, on edge, or unable to shut your mind off
Feeling low, unmotivated, numb, or unlike yourself
Getting angry or frustrated more quickly than you used to
Holding things in until they come out in ways you do not intend
Feeling disconnected from yourself or the people you love
Work stress, burnout, or pressure that follows you home
Struggling in your relationship or repeating patterns you do not understand
Feeling like you are falling short as a partner, parent, or person
Being there for everyone else while having very little left for yourself
A loss of confidence, direction, identity, or purpose
Having a hard time saying no, setting boundaries, or asking for what you need
Trouble keeping up with everyday demands
Something from your past that is still affecting you now
Grief, loss, or a change you are struggling to make sense of
Feeling lonely even when you are surrounded by people
Knowing something needs to change, but not knowing where to start
How Individual Counselling Can Help
There is no single way to do individual therapy. We want to understand not only what you are struggling with, but how you got here, what keeps certain patterns going, and what you might need for something to begin to shift.
Sometimes that means slowing down and making sense of emotions that feel overwhelming or difficult to access. Sometimes it means noticing patterns in your relationships, understanding why you react the way you do, or working through experiences from the past that continue to show up in the present. It can also mean finding practical ways to manage stress, communicate differently, set boundaries, or feel more grounded when things get hard.
All of our therapists are trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy and work from an attachment lens, giving us a shared language for understanding people, emotions, relationships, and patterns. From that foundation, each therapist brings their own lived experience, areas of interest, additional training, and therapeutic approaches. The work may look different depending on who you choose to work with, while still being grounded in a way of understanding people that connects us as a team.

Find Your Therapist
All of our therapists offer individual counselling, but each brings their own personality, lived experience, areas of interest, and additional training to the work.
You can explore our team and choose someone who stands out to you, or connect with Angela, our Client Care Coordinator, if you would like some help narrowing it down. Tell her a little about what you are looking for and what matters to you in a therapist, and she can suggest a few people on our team who may be a good fit.
Individual Counselling in Oakville and Across Ontario
Individual counselling is available in person at our village hub, Therapeutic Collective Oakville, and virtually across Ontario. Our Oakville space was intentionally designed for connection, with comfortable therapy rooms and a community of therapists working alongside one another.
Virtual therapy gives you another kind of flexibility. You can meet with your therapist from home, your office, or even a parked car between everything else in your day. And you do not have to choose just one. A hybrid approach is always an option, allowing you to move between in-person and virtual sessions depending on what works best for you.
When You Are Ready, We Are Here
Reaching out for therapy can feel unfamiliar, especially if you are used to handling things on your own. You do not have to know exactly what you want to talk about or where therapy will take you. Starting with a conversation is enough.
Our complimentary 15-minute Meet & Greet gives you a chance to meet one of our therapists, ask questions, and get a sense of whether they feel like the right fit for you. It takes a village to heal, and we would love to be a part of yours.
Questions About Individual Counselling
-
If you and the therapist feel like it could be a good fit, you can book your first 90-minute individual therapy session and begin from there. There is no pressure to decide during the Meet & Greet, and booking one does not commit you to working with that therapist.
If the fit does not feel quite right, that is okay too. Finding someone you feel comfortable with matters. You are welcome to book a Meet & Greet with another therapist on our team and see if someone else feels like a better fit. Sometimes it takes a conversation or two to find your person.
-
Your first individual therapy session is 90 minutes, giving you and your therapist more time to get to know one another without feeling rushed. You will begin by talking through consent, confidentiality, and anything you need to know about the therapy process. From there, the conversation is much more organic. Your therapist will want to understand what brought you in, some of the experiences and relationships that have shaped you, what life looks like right now, and what you hope might be different.
You do not need to prepare anything or know where to begin. Your therapist can help with that.

You would not be alone. Many of the people who come to us have tried therapy before. They may have learned useful strategies, gained insight, or understood what they should do differently, but still find themselves getting pulled back into the same emotions, reactions, or relationship patterns.
Strategies can be incredibly helpful, and they may be part of the work we do together too. But knowing what to do does not always change what happens when you are overwhelmed, triggered, shutting down, or caught in a familiar pattern. That is where we often become curious about what is happening underneath and why the pattern has been so difficult to change.
You can tell us what you have tried before, what helped, what did not, and what you are hoping might feel different this time. We can start from there.

Finding the right therapist is about more than choosing someone who works with the issue you are experiencing. Their personality, approach, areas of interest and training, and simply how you feel when you talk with them can all matter.
You can explore our therapists’ individual profiles and book a complimentary 15-minute Meet & Greet with someone you are interested in. It gives you a chance to ask questions, hear a little about how they work, and get a feel for whether this is someone you can imagine talking to.
Still not sure who to choose? You can connect with Angela, our Client Care Coordinator. Tell her a little about what you are looking for, what matters to you in a therapist, and any preferences you may have, and she can suggest a few therapists on our team who may be a good fit. You will still get to decide who you would like to meet.

No. Some people arrive with a very specific reason for coming to therapy. Others know that something feels off but have a hard time explaining what it is. Both are good places to start. We can start with what you know and figure out the rest together.
-
This is one of the most common questions we are asked, and one of the hardest to answer. There is no set number of sessions or session limit at Counselling & Co. Some people come to therapy to work through something specific, while others find that therapy becomes a longer-term source of support.
We tend to be relational therapists, meaning we understand emotional health in the context of connection. Even in individual therapy, you are always in relationship with other people. Partners, children, friends, colleagues, aging parents, family members, and the people in your community can all shape how you feel and how you experience yourself. As life changes, our relationships change too, and sometimes new things emerge that we want support understanding or working through.
In the beginning, we usually recommend meeting more consistently. This gives you and your therapist time to get to know one another, understand what is happening, and build a foundation for the work. Over time, therapy can change with you. You might come less often when life feels steadier, check in monthly because you value having a neutral place to talk things through, or return to more frequent sessions when something difficult comes up or there is deeper work you want to do.
Some clients work with us for a shorter season, while others stay connected to their therapist for years. There is no right timeline. You and your therapist can continue talking about what you need, how often it makes sense to meet, and whether therapy continues to feel useful to you.
-
Yes. Individual therapy is available in person at our village hub, Therapeutic Collective Oakville, and virtually across Ontario. You can also take a hybrid approach and move between in-person and virtual sessions depending on your schedule and what works best for you.

We do not want cost to be the reason you cannot access support. Our Affordable Therapy Program offers lower-cost counselling with our intern therapists, with no limit on the number of sessions.
If therapy feels financially out of reach, connect with our Client Care team. We can talk with you about what is affordable and whether one of our Affordable Therapy Program therapists might be a good fit.
