Child Therapy in Oakville
Helping You Understand Your Child in a Way That Brings You Closer
You know your child.
You know their moods, their quirks, what makes them laugh, and what a hard day looks like for them. So when something starts to feel different, you notice. Maybe the big feelings are getting bigger, they are worrying more, pulling away, struggling at school or with friends, or simply do not seem quite like themselves lately. You may not know exactly what is going on, but you know your child is having a hard time.
At Counselling & Co., we start from the belief that your child’s reactions make sense when we understand what is happening underneath them. The big feelings, the behaviour, the worry, the withdrawal, or even the “I don’t know” when you ask what is wrong. Child therapy gives us a place to get curious about what your child may not yet have the words to explain, while helping you understand them in a way that brings you closer.
What You Might Be Noticing From Your Child
Every child shows us they are struggling and need support differently. You might be noticing:
School avoidance, distress, or a sudden change in school
Perfectionism or being incredibly hard on themselves
Changes in sleep, appetite, or everyday routines
Struggling after a separation, move, loss, new sibling, or other family change
Feeling different, misunderstood, or like they do not quite fit
Changes after something frightening, overwhelming, or traumatic
A child who simply does not seem quite like themselves lately
Worry that feels hard for them to turn off
Stomach aches, headaches, or other physical complaints
Big emotions, meltdowns, or frequent outbursts
Shutting down or going quiet when things feel like too much
Holding it together at school, then falling apart at home
Trouble separating from you or needing more reassurance
Difficulty making or keeping friends
Sometimes it is a crisis that brings a family to therapy. Other times, it is simply knowing your child and sensing that something feels different. Both are enough of a reason to reach out.
How Child Therapy Can Help
Our work with children is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy and an attachment lens. This helps us understand what may be happening underneath the behaviour, rather than focusing only on how to make the behaviour stop. Children do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling or why they are struggling. Sometimes they show us through big emotions, withdrawal, worry, play, their bodies, or the ways they respond to the people around them.
While attachment and EFT help guide how we understand your child, our therapists draw from a variety of approaches to help them engage in therapy in ways that feel natural for their age and development. Sessions might include play, art, games, movement, creative activities, or conversation. These are not simply ways to keep a child busy. They can give children different ways to communicate, explore what they are experiencing, build skills, and connect with their therapist when words are not enough.
And because children grow and heal within relationships, the work does not stop at the therapy room door. We help you better understand what your child may be communicating, respond differently when things get hard, and strengthen the connection between you. The goal is not to have a child who never has big feelings. It is a child who feels increasingly able to understand themselves, turn toward the people they trust, and know they do not have to manage hard things alone.
Sometimes what is happening is not only about your child. If your family feels caught in patterns of conflict, disconnection, or big emotions that seem to involve everyone, family therapy may be another place to start. Together, we can help you figure out which kind of support makes the most sense for your family.
You're Part of the Process, Too
Child therapy at Counselling & Co. is not about dropping your child off and hoping the therapist can figure out what is wrong. You know your child in ways we never could, which makes your perspective an important part of the work.
We begin with a parent or caregiver session so we can learn about your child’s history, relationships, strengths, challenges, and what life has been like for your family. As therapy continues, we will check in with you along the way. Sometimes that means helping you make sense of what your child is communicating through their behaviour, sometimes it means thinking together about how to respond when things get hard, and sometimes the relationship between you and your child becomes part of the work itself.

Child Therapy in Oakville
Child therapy at Counselling & Co. is offered in person at our village hub, Therapeutic Collective Oakville. The space was intentionally designed for connection, with room for children to play, create, move, and engage with their therapist in ways that feel natural to them.
In some circumstances, we may also offer child therapy in your home. In-home sessions are considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on your child’s needs, your family’s circumstances, therapist availability, and location. If you think in-home therapy might be a good fit for your child, we can talk about this with you when you reach out.

Getting Started With Child Therapy
Our child therapists generally work with children ages 5 and up. Child therapy through our Affordable Therapy Program begins at age 7. You can start by booking a complimentary 15-minute Meet & Greet with one of our child therapists. It is a chance to tell us a little about what has been happening, ask questions, and get a sense of whether the therapist feels like the right fit for your child and family.
Once you decide to move forward, we typically begin with a parent or caregiver session before your child’s first appointment. This gives us time to understand the bigger picture and think together about how to begin the work with your child.
Questions About Child Therapy
-
No. Some children come to therapy with a diagnosis, while others come because a parent has noticed something feels different, their child is struggling, or the family is going through a difficult time. Your child does not need a diagnosis to receive support.
Our therapists do not provide formal psychological assessments or diagnoses. If questions come up about whether an assessment might be helpful, we can talk that through with you and help you understand what kind of additional support or assessment you may want to explore.
-
Before we meet with your child, we begin with a 90-minute parent or caregiver session. This gives us time to understand your child’s story from the beginning, including pregnancy and postpartum experiences, early development, temperament, relationships, family history, school experiences, strengths, and the changes or challenges you are noticing now.
We also want to understand what parenting has been like for you. We will talk about where you feel confident, where you may feel stuck or unsure, and what kind of support would help you feel better equipped to understand and respond to your child.
We also use this time to talk through the practical pieces of child therapy, including consent and working with minors, confidentiality, how we communicate with you, and how parents and caregivers will be involved as therapy moves forward. There is plenty of time for your questions too.
-
We see parents and caregivers as an important part of the therapeutic process and, whenever possible, encourage you to stay involved in your child’s therapy. What that involvement looks like can vary depending on your child’s age, needs, the goals for therapy, and what works for your family.
Parent involvement might include check-ins with the therapist, parent sessions, joining your child for part of a session, or working together to better understand and respond to what is happening at home. We will talk with you about what involvement could look like and what feels manageable for your family.
-
Your child needs to know that therapy is a place where they can talk openly, so we take their privacy seriously. At the same time, we know you are an important part of their life and their therapy. We will help you understand themes that may be important for supporting your child without necessarily sharing the details of everything they tell us. If we are concerned about your child’s safety or there is information we are required to disclose, we will follow our professional and legal responsibilities and involve you when appropriate.
-
We know this can add another layer to beginning therapy. As part of our consent process, we will talk with you about parenting arrangements, consent to treatment, and how communication about your child’s therapy will be handled. We use a communication plan to create clear expectations about how information is shared with parents and caregivers. Depending on your circumstances, we may also ask to review relevant parenting agreements or documentation before therapy begins.
-
In Ontario, consent to treatment is based on capacity rather than a specific age. This means a young person may be able to consent to their own therapy if they can understand the information relevant to the decision and appreciate the reasonably foreseeable consequences of making or not making that decision. Your child’s therapist will consider their individual capacity and circumstances when discussing consent and confidentiality.
-
Our child therapists generally work with children ages 5 and up. Child therapy through our Affordable Therapy Program begins at age 7. At Counselling & Co., we generally consider child therapy to be for children up to age 12, with youth ages 13 and older falling under Teen Therapy.
Each therapist works with different ages and areas of focus, so their individual profile will tell you more about who they work with and whether they may be a good fit for your child.
-
No. Our child therapy sessions are offered in person at our village hub, Therapeutic Collective Oakville. Being together in person gives children more freedom to play, create, move, and engage naturally during therapy.
-
Sometimes. In-home child therapy may be available on a case-by-case basis depending on your child’s needs, your family’s circumstances, therapist availability, and location. If you are interested in in-home support, you can ask about it during your Meet & Greet.
-
We know the cost of therapy can be a real consideration for families. Our Affordable Therapy Program offers lower-cost counselling with our intern therapists, including child therapy for children ages 7 and up.
If cost is getting in the way of accessing support for your child, connect with our Client Care team. We can talk with you about what is affordable and whether one of our Affordable Therapy Program therapists might be a good fit for your child and family.
